A reason for the bob
About every review of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull has mentioned the haircut worn by Cate Blanchett's character - a severe bob a la Louise Brooks. (Similarly, many reviews of Christina Ricci's role in the recent Speedracer also mentioned her Brooks-like bob.) Well, those references to Brooks and her famous haircut are just that, references. No big deal - they show up on my "Louise Brooks news alert."

Well, it turns out there is a reason after all for Blanchett's (aka CB) hairstyle. In a recent interview with Cinematical, director George Lucas (aka GL) revealed his regard for Louise Brooks.
Was that hairdo an homage to somebody specifically in the fifties?

CB: Well, Vidal Sassoon. ...

GL: I'm a big fan of Louise Brooks, a big fan of the bob, and I couldn't resist. I just had to get that in a movie.

CB: I didn't resist.

GL: Just something that had to happen.

I wish I had known. I once went to the Skywalker Ranch north of San Francisco. And I was impressed by the silent film movie memorabilia on display. None of it was Brooks related, but there was stuff belonging to Rudolph Valentino, the Keystone cops, etc..... George Lucas wasn't there at the time. But had I known of his interest in Brooks, I would have left him a LBS button. George, write to me . . . . I have an idea for a film.

My Louise Brooks "Google Alert" also has been sending me a stready stream of Indy film reviews. I read the first one, I think, but now I just delete all of them from my email. :) None of the recent bobs I've seen (ricci, jena malone, etc.) look at all appropriate on these women. Maybe to pull it off properly your face has to be a certain shape....

Well, thanks a lot, buddy! Maybe if you [always carried one with you just in case, and] had left an LBS button at Skywalker Ranch, George "Vidal" Lucas would have gotten his "Louise Brooks bob" styled correctly, and people would have seen what a true one looks like. She never wore it the way Cate Blanchett has it with that wig, straight and to the jawline (right?). That strikes me as more Colleen Moore -- though hers had a little curl to it, too. And those sunglasses are anachronistic from a Twenties viewpoint....

I'm amazed that a couple of dozen reviewers mentioned Brooks, as if everyone has a mental image of her.

As for Blanchett, the Daily Mail (U.K.) reported this comment from her: "Well, I've got the ugliest hairstyle ever seen. A sort of pudding bowl helmet cut." Huh! Good thing Galadriel doesn't figure in The Hobbit....

Speaking of ranches, though ... I see LOVE 'EM AND LEAVE 'EM (boys, not buttons) will be shown at the Paramount Ranch this August: http://www.hollywoodheritage.org/events.html .

Cate looks stunning in the film, true to the Brooks bob or no. She carries it off well.

Did anyone see the similar cut on Gemma Arterton in the new St Trinian's film? I thought she looked good too, but she's no Brooksie.
