Wowza
According to a reliable eBay seller, "ON MARCH 27, 2008, PROFILES IN HISTORY of LOS ANGELES set the highest price to date for an ALFRED CHENEY JOHNSTON PHOTOGRAPH - $9,500.00 for an unsigned 10" X 13" VINTAGE PORTRAIT OF LOUISE BROOKS!!"

Wowza!

Plus the 20%, $1800 "Buyer's Premium." As I recall, in that auction, photographs of Louise Brooks commanded higher prices than those of 10 or 12 other prominent silent era actresses, with one exception (whom I don't recall).

Profiles in History will be back with another dozen photos of Brooks in "Hollywood Auction #32" on July 31 & August 1, on line (eBay) and in situ (Calabasas Hills, California -- hope they're stored in a fireproof safe). See http://www.liveauctions.ebay.com/catalogs/25675 .

They're also offering a Lot of "151 keybook stills of Gary Cooper and Lili Damita from Fighting Caravans"....

There were some rare photos of Louise in there. Nice selection of Bull, Bachrach, Louise, Hurrell, etc. shots. I'm holding out for the studio prop auction un August - I'd kill for that "Frank the Rabbit" mask from Donnie Darko.

I have results for 10 Brooks Items from the Profiles in History auction on July 31st. [Gee, I've just met a 60-year Redskins fan. "George Marshall was king as far as the Redskins were concerned," said he.] Three of 'em (eBay Items 260257423909 [a Dyar I hadn't seen], 230267017980 [the ubiquitous Louise closeup on eBay], and 230267017974 [from the series that was represented here on the Blog last Nov. 2nd]), expected to sell for $900-$1500 combined, managed to go for $1075. These were the clunkers of the Brooksie Lots.

Item 330248745465 [a mannish Louise], expected to sell for around a thou, went for two -- making it "the best of the worst."

The four stellar performers were Items 230267017966 [posted on the Blog last April 27th], 230267017972 [Colfax College tutu medium shot], 330248745459 [Colfax full shot], 330248745459 [ditto], and 230267017986 [a non-Colfax Richee], expected $1400-$2100 combined, SOLD! for $11,350. Golly, yes I'd shell out a spare $2100 for just the last one, but personally, I'm not big on the tutu stills. (I'd sure as hell pay $11,350 to have a print of the movie they're from.)

The Park Place and Boardwalk of the Brooks auction Items, 230267020164 [a Dyar medium shot of Louise lounging in frills -- killer] and 260257426648 [from "Canary," Louise in exotic & translucent dress], expected $9000 and brought in $24,000. Not as impressive percentage-wise as the last-mentioned Lots, but you could trade 'em for a good new car if you found a car dealer with a weakness for Louise Brooks.

P.S. Frank the Rabbit, expected to hop home for 11,000, dropped way more pellets: 25,000.
